When 2020 started, everyone was looking forward to it. It was the start of a new decade, and almost everyone had their own New Years’ resolution set in stone. Everyone thought that this was the year they’re finally going to get control and start doing the things they love. For some people, their new plans involved seeing their friends more often.
For other people, this was the resolution to travel the world. Or at least visit a handful of new countries and places. Some people wanted to work on themselves and start working out. However, no one planned for what happened. From a small outbreak of a virus in the city of Wuhan, COVID-19 began to spread around the world. Click here to read more.
Now, many countries are entirely closing their borders. It’s an invisible enemy that the entire world has to face together. We all need to be healthy and keep being informed as much as we can. Most people think that it’s just like the flu, but that’s wrong. It’s way more infectious and dangerous. You need to know what it is, how to combat it, and what to do.
What is it?
There is still a discussion about whether viruses are living beings or not. That’s because they can only multiply in other organisms’ cells. They infect organic beings. That includes people, animals, birds, plants, and also bacteria.
We’ll try to explain it. When a virus comes to a cell, it sticks to it and lets go of its genetic material. Then, this genetic material enters the nucleus of the cell. When it does, it becomes the new commander in the host cell. So, whatever the viral genetic code says, that’s what’s going to happen.
It overrides the entire function and asks for more viruses to be created. As soon as all of the material has been spent, it sends the chief command. That’s self-destruction, and after that, there is a myriad of other cells that get infected. This happens quite fast, and if you get infected, you can reach billions of infected cells in as little as ten days. How does it spread?
We still don’t know everything, and researchers are spending day and night to figure it out. However, we do know how it spreads. Most of the time, it happens through the air, and via touching contaminated objects. Since we can’t see what surfaces are infected, we tend to touch our face, and it enters our respiratory tract.
As soon as that happens, the coronavirus starts to multiply. But, our bodies have an immune system to combat any harmful particles that enter. However, this particular enemy can infect our immune cells too. This can wreak havoc inside the lungs. The immune system can destroy everything it sets its mind to. The mutated coronavirus interferes with the work of this system.
This causes our own body to attack itself. While attacking contaminated viral particles, it also attacks healthy, working cells. This makes our bodies more susceptible to bacteria. To make things clearer, three things are happening at the same time.
The first thing is that the coronavirus is multiplying inside our lungs. The second thing is that our immune system attacks both healthy and infected cells. And the third thing is that bacteria starts to invade our body. Since the immune system is weaker, and our energy stores are getting lower and lower, bacteria can cause pneumonia. This is why every country in the world is looking for respirators. A large number of people are getting it, and we have a limited amount of resources to battle a common enemy. Older people have weakened organisms; that’s why they have a higher chance of death from it.
What should you do about it?
There are two ways that a disease like this one can develop. The first one is a fast spread, and the second one is a slow spread. A fast spread causes a ton of people to get infected, which will overwhelm all hospitals and resources. This will cause doctors to pick who gets treated and who doesn’t. In situations like these, a slow spread is the better way to go.
This way, everyone will get a chance to get treated, and the mortality rate will be much lower. The best thing that you can do is to limit your contact with people and to go outside. If everyone sticks to it, there are reports that it will go away in less than a few months. In the other case, it might last for a year or more.
How is the world going to be affected by it?
Since this is a global matter, the World Health Organization (WHO) has proclaimed this time as a worldwide pandemic. The entire economy is taking a blow too. Stocks are plummeting, and many people are wondering whether or not they are going to lose their jobs. There are also predictions for coronavirus and mortgage rates. The main predictions now are that they’re going to plummet along with the market.
How to protect yourself?
The best way to protect yourself is to wash your hands. It’s everywhere on the media, and that’s because it helps. We can’t resist touching our faces, and the virus mainly spreads through the hands. Soaps have an excellent property because they kill off the dangerous particles and break away their bonds.
The optimal time to wash your hands is around thirty seconds. That’s how much it takes to sing Happy Birthday. In any case, you should clean as if you’ve just cut a chilly pepper, and now you need to touch your eyes. Limit your contact with people outside. And if possible, work from home. If you need to go out, do it shortly and efficiently. Wear a mask and gloves and protect yourself at all times.
